Everyone has been on Cloud 9 at EXHALE – or rather, on Cloud No. 40.
We are delighted to see our work being internationally recognised. To take a client from idea and conception right through to design and build is an incredible journey that requires meticulous planning and detail every step of the way.
People ask us how we usually start the process of a dream home, and one of the simplest exercises we do is to get clients to tell us about their typical day. Which room do you spend the most time in? Where do you start and end the day? What spaces do you utilise? Another effective method to gauge someone’s taste and style is to ask them where they have felt the most inspired. Was it a luxury hotel they visited? What facilties, views or rooms made it special?
These details tell us a lot about how to create someone’s dream space – a space which will forever be their inspiration and a platform for life-long memories.
About No. 40
The No.40 project is incredibly unique as the main driving design element in the brief from the client was the use of fairface concrete. The challenge was to blend different textures and materials into the structure that would either complement or juxtapose the stark beauty of the concrete.
Materials and Design
With fairface concrete being the primary material in use, additional materials included standing seam aluminium, anodised aluminium window frames left silver in colour, and frameless glass (this resulted in an interesting effect where window frames appear to be ‘floating’), polished concrete flooring and decorative peranakan concrete tiles.
A creative entrance sequence features a 3m by 3m glass front entrance door while still maintaining privacy inside the house. The final approved design seamlessly connected all the requested program elements while giving the client the contemporary concrete look they desired.
Our Director of Design, Carol Bochsler, is incredibly passionate about sustainable design. No. 40 was designed with reduced energy consumption in mind, using sustainable construction materials and innovative technology such as a salt water pool system, slower speed ceiling fans, solar water heaters, rain water harvesting, and LED lighting.
We really listened to what the client wanted and why particular materials were important to them. The end result proved to be very fulfilling and as an added bonus, award-winning! We are absolutely thrilled with our award and will be presented with the plaque at the official ceremony held 7 - 8th May 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
